AHMAD USMAN EL-MARZUQ .ESQ
Ahmad Usman El-Marzuq is the Founding Partner of White Gold Attorneys, a Life Bencher and an accomplished legal practitioner whose professional career spans nearly four decades across legal practice, public service, banking and finance, corporate leadership, governance and public policy.
A lawyer with extensive experience beyond conventional legal practice, he brings to the Firm a distinctive combination of legal expertise, financial-sector experience, executive leadership and high-level public service. His multidisciplinary background enables him to provide strategic counsel on matters requiring an appreciation not only of the law, but also of the commercial, financial, regulatory and institutional considerations underlying complex transactions and disputes.
He was called to the Nigerian Bar following his legal education at Bayero University, Kano, where he obtained his LL.B. (Hons), and the Nigerian Law School, Lagos, where he obtained his B.L. His career has since traversed private legal practice, banking and financial markets, executive management and public service.
Legal Practice
Ahmad has considerable experience in private legal practice. As Principal Solicitor of A. U. El-Marzuq & Co., Legal Practitioners & Consultants, he advised and represented clients on a broad range of matters, including commercial transactions, legal advisory and consultancy, debt recovery, litigation, legal drafting, and the preparation and review of business agreements.
His legal practice is complemented by extensive commercial and financial experience, allowing him to approach transactions and disputes from both legal and business perspectives. At White Gold Attorneys, he provides senior strategic direction and counsel across the Firm's corporate, commercial, financial, regulatory, public law and dispute-resolution practices.
Public Law, Governance & Public Service
Ahmad has held significant public and professional responsibilities at both state and national levels.
He served on two separate occasions as Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Katsina State, first from 2015 to 2019 and subsequently from 2019 to 2022. In that capacity, he served as the State's Chief Law Officer and provided legal and policy advice to the Government on matters of public administration, governance and law.
In August 2021, he attained the distinguished status of Life Bencher, reflecting his standing and contribution within the Nigerian legal profession.
His experience in public affairs also includes service on governmental transition and policy committees as well as assignments involving electoral and institutional processes at state and national levels.
This depth of public-sector experience provides him with a sophisticated understanding of the relationship between law, government, regulation, policy and the private sector—an important dimension of his advisory work at White Gold Attorneys.
Banking, Finance & Financial Markets
Before his senior public-service roles, Ahmad built an extensive career in Nigeria's banking and financial-services industry, holding leadership positions across treasury, investment management, public-sector banking, credit and risk management, foreign exchange, asset and liability management, and financial-market operations.
His banking career included senior responsibilities as Head of Treasury, Branch Manager, Manager and Group Head of Public Sector, and other executive and managerial positions. He also served as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Incar (Nigeria) Plc, with responsibility for strategic business direction, governance, risk management, business expansion, operational planning and executive leadership.
His experience within the financial markets was further reflected in his service as a two-term Pioneer Vice-President of the Money Market Association of Nigeria, an umbrella association of Nigerian bank treasurers.
This extensive financial-sector background is integral to his work as a commercial lawyer. It gives him a practical understanding of the commercial realities underlying financing arrangements, investments, corporate transactions, credit, risk, regulatory compliance and financial disputes.
Corporate & Strategic Advisory
Having served as a lawyer, banker, treasury professional, chief executive and Attorney-General, Ahmad brings an unusually broad perspective to corporate and strategic advisory matters.
He advises from an understanding that complex commercial decisions often extend beyond narrow questions of legal compliance. They require an appreciation of commercial risk, financial structure, corporate governance, regulatory exposure and institutional relationships.
His experience is particularly relevant to businesses, financial institutions, investors, public-sector entities and senior decision-makers requiring counsel at the intersection of law, finance, business and government.
Leadership & Institutional Experience
Beyond legal and commercial practice, Ahmad has held leadership responsibilities across professional, educational, political and community institutions. He is the Proprietor and Founding Chairman of Malka Academy, Kaduna, where he has provided strategic and policy leadership to the institution.
Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous professional training programmes covering financial markets, treasury management, asset and liability management, credit analysis, strategic marketing, anti-money laundering and economic crimes.
He is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association and the Certified Pension Institute.
